Focus On: Cover Letters
Many students find writing their cover letter more difficult than writing their resume. That said, we in the Career Development Center (CDC), Room 232 of the Wise Campus Center, are here to help.
Here are a few tips to get you started with your cover letter:
+It's easier to write your cover letter once your resume is completed and reviewed by a professional--a free service offered by the CDC.
+Use a business letter format for your cover letter and address it to a specific person. Make the tone of your letter professional and enthusiastic. Tailor each letter to a specific position, company, or organization.
+Your letter should typically be three or four paragraphs on a single page. The first paragraph should include the title of the specific position you are interested in, how you heard about the position, and demonstrate some knowledge of the employer. Remember your purpose--to get the interview.
+The middle one or two paragraphs should briefly show the employer how your education, skills, interests, and personal attributes would make you a candidate worthy of an interview. Do not simply reiterate the facts from your resume. Instead, use specific examples to illustrate your point(s).
+The closing paragraph should be specific about how and when you plan to follow up, as well as mention when you might be available for interviews. Also use this last paragraph to re-emphasize your main selling points.
+Make sure your letter is 100 percent error free! It is best to have someone other than you proofread the letter. This is the first impression an employer will have of your work--make it a good one!
If you need more advice or would like someone to review your cover letter, please call the CDC at 485-2125 to set up an appointment with one of the counselors. We look forward to assisting you.
