Focus on: Where to search for jobs

Not all of the ideas below will apply to everyone, but use what

you can from the list below. Contact the Norwich University Career

Development Center at (802) 485-2125 or careers@ norwich.edu if

you need more information or advice!

- Use Career Compass, accessible from www.alumni.norwich.edu/careercenter to search and apply for jobs and internships posted to the NU site. Also, don't forget to use the "Expanded NACELink Job Search" tool to see over 6 million jobs aggregated from top search engines and company websites.

- Go to the NU Career Center website at www.alumni.norwich.edu. Click on "Search Business Cards and Mentors." This will pull up a form that allows you to search from over 1,000 alumni volunteers who are willing to serve as a career resource to NU students and alumni. Simply click on the appropriate occupation or industry, leave all other fields blank, and hit "search" at the bottom. When the system retrieves your list of volunteers, review their information and contact one or two volunteers to see if they can be of any assistance.

- Take advantage of your local Norwich Club. From the website, click on "NU Clubs."

- Attend career fairs at Norwich, other colleges in Vermont and in your hometown area.

- Use job search engines. Both "industry specific" and "general" job search engines can be found on our website by clicking "Undergraduate Student," then "Career Paths."

- Join industry specific professional organizations and use their websites. Attend conferences to do some face-to-face networking. Read their publications, which often have a classified/jobs section.

- If you are interested in federal employment, click on that section under "Useful Links" on the website. Sign up for job alerts at www.usajobs.gov and other similar sites.

- Many local radio and TV stations have jumped on the "jobs" bandwagon. Go to their websites and see if they have any job listings. Check out online and alternative newspapers, too.

- Employment agents can be a very valuable resource. Check out the employment agencies owned by NU alumni on our website!

- Think internationally, especially if you have a technical career which can be of great value in developing parts of the world. Click on the "ihipo.com" link on our website.

- Once you're a junior or senior and have had your resume reviewed by the NU Career Development Center, join the "Norwich University Connections" LinkedIn Group. LinkedIn is not Facebook. It is a professional networking site established by and for NU alumni to help with job and other professional information. A "how to" guide for joining LinkedIn is also available on our website!
