Math and science building renamed Bartoletto Hall
A Norwich alumni from the class of 1952 donated money to the university which led to the renaming of the math and science building in April of 2009, according to Dave Whaley, vice president of development and alumni relations at Norwich University.
A.J. Bartoletto is a World War II veteran who began his Norwich career after he fulfilled his time in the service. Bartoletto was on the Dean's List for four years, president of the junior class and a member of skulls and swords.
"He was very active when he was here, and he stayed active with Norwich after he graduated," said Whaley.
Bartoletto found it important to donate money to Norwich because "they're rather unique," and he likes the fact that Norwich unites military, civilian and international students in one learning environment.
The construction of the math and science complex was already completed when the Bartolettos made their donation. "Their gift went directly to support the Norwich campaign," said Richard Schneider, president of Norwich University.
Bartoletto earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Norwich so it is no coincidence that the math and science building is named for him.
"This building will forever carry the name Bartoletto Hall and will be a constant way to remember A.J. and his wife Anne's service and contribution to NU," Schneider said. "It will serve as a model for all our students, how to live [their] lives and also give back to the university that gave [them] so much."
Bartoletto took the knowledge he gained from his studies at Norwich and founded Temperform Corporations in the early 1970s. Temperform is a multi-million dollar, international company that specializes in the construction of stainless steel castings. The castings are designed to be used at temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit in environments such as oil refineries.
Whaley attributed part of A.J. Bartoletto's success to the support of his wife Anne. "They've worked together to build a business and they're working together now to give back to Norwich".
Bartoletto did not wish to reveal the exact amount of his donation. "We made a commitment, we made a pledge and we hope to surpass that pledge later." Bartoletto believes in Norwich and he believes that if the university continues to expand it will become one of the greatest military colleges in the United States.
"I totally support it and I'm deadly committed to the Norwich legacy," Bartoletto said.
