Student activities become focused on both lifestyles
Since admitting civilian students, Norwich has been trying to make sure the two lifestyles not only co-exist, but socialize and work together.
Ian Hulse, a 20-year-old junior computer security major from Farmington, Conn., is in charge of coordinating campus activities such as Regimental Ball and intramural activities.
"The Regimental Ball is just for members of the corps of cadets," Hulse said, "but the Junior Ring Ball is open to all students."
Section five (S5) of the corps of cadets is in charge of staffing and planning the balls and events on campus. Section five helps coordinate the campus movies that are played on Friday and Saturday nights, and karaoke night on Friday nights.
"We don't really have a strong intramural basis yet, but we are working on it," Hulse said. Section five and student activities have been working together to plan more intramural events to help bridge the gap between corps students and traditional students.
Last year, hockey and football events were scheduled for both lifestyles but there was no interest.
"For intramural sports it's always been about staffing it and finding interest,." Hulse said.
The largest activity that integrates both lifestyles is the Junior Ring ball, which is open to any student on campus to celebrate the juniors receiving their class rings.
The Student Activities Board bridges the corps and traditional lifestyles when it comes to campus activities.
"The campus activities board is the only place where we deal with traditional students, it's both traditional and corps of cadets students and we work with (the student activities board) to do activities on campus," said Kylee Joelene, a 21-year-old nursing major from Coventry, Conn., who is also involved with S5.
"The campus activities board works to find members that are traditional students, commuter students, on campus, off campus and corps of cadets of all years." Joelene said.
The student activities board has a representative from every class to ensure each class's voice is heard when planning campus events.
The student activities board has been advertising its meetings to get more of the campus involved. The more people who join, the more feedback and ideas can be put into place to have more successful student activities around campus.
