NU provides counseling to all students
All college students, both male and female, deal with many stresses including relationships and rigorous academics. "There are many young men and women who need to talk to somebody about what's on their mind." said Dr. Melvin Miller, director of counseling and psychological services at Norwich.
The program, located on the fourth floor of the library, was founded by Dr. Miller in 1982.
The counseling center has three psychologists: Dr. Miller, Dr. Aaron Lewis and Heidi Rodenberger, who is here for a year as a "psychology intern."
A psychology intern is a student who is in their "last year of their doctorate degree," said Rodenberger.
As far as clientele are concerned, "half are corps, the other half civilian," Dr. Miller said.
"… and about 60 percent males and 40 percent females," said Dr. Lewis, a post doctoral fellow at the counseling center.
The office hours of the counseling center are between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Students can also make emergency appointments if needed. "There's always an on-call therapist." for emergency needs." said Dr. Lewis.
"Typically when we're contacted through the pager someone calls campus security or the infirmary," said Dr. Lewis. The pager number can be found online at the counseling center Web page.
Counseling does not have to be done alone. "We're open to see couples in relationship," said Dr. Lewis.
The center can be an effective outlet for students and no one should be discouraged or embarrassed to go see a counselor, center staff said.
