New South Hall dorm littered with trash problems

Residence Life reports that students living in South Hall, Norwich's newest dormitory, are taking good care of the building; there are no vandalism issues as of now according to the assistant director of residence life.

"In my opinion, I think students in South Hall are taking very good care of the building," said Jose Sinclair, the assistant director of Residence Life and a resident of South Hall. "For the most part, I think the students are doing very well with making sure the areas inside the building are clean."

While there are no reports of vandalism to the building, the furniture or the media equipment, students report problems with trash.

"The only thing we are having problems with in South Hall is people throwing their trash out the window," said Christopher Bean, 21, a senior criminal justice major from Keene, N.H. "I don't know why they can't put it in the trash but there is a ton of trash out there now."

"Students are throwing stuff out the windows; [for example] pumpkins," Sinclair said. "I would not call it vandalism. I would call that hygiene and not having common sense to go throw it in the trash."

The littering that is going on outside of South Hall is mainly happening on the side closest to Parking Lot B. The trash is causing a concern about hygiene.

"It is absolutely disgusting and kids need to learn to throw stuff out in the trashcans," said Zach Martineau, 19, sophomore architecture major from Duanesburg, N.Y. "We have more than enough trash cans and recycle bins here in the building and they should learn how to use them."

According to Bean, the garbage being thrown out the windows includes  cups, plates, food, bottles of urine, Ramen Noodles and Chinese food.

"We've never seen anyone throw it out the window, but it is obviously coming from somewhere on that side of the building," Bean said.

"It could have been thrown from pretty much any floor and any window," Martineau said.

"During the floor meetings, we have discussed it. We have posters about the rules and lounges," Sinclair said. "It is not the responsibility of Residence Life to pick up things."
