Students relax during spring break
Crazy parties, amazing beaches or just relaxing at home: These are just a few options that Norwich students have to do during spring break.
For Erica Schueler, a 19-year-old sophomore communication major from Norfolk, Va., the choice wasn't too hard to make.
"I spent spring break hanging out with my family that I haven't seen in a while, so it was nice to finally get to see them. I also spent a lot of time at the beach and hanging out with my friends. I went shopping a lot too," Schueler said.
Spring breaks have the reputation of partying and a trip to Mexico but not all college students follow that itinerary.
The Norwich student body had its spring break from March 13-21. For most students the break was needed and they took full advantage of it.
"I spent spring break in Washington, D.C., with family and I just laid back and relaxed because it was needed," said Parker Babbe, an 18-year-old freshman business management major from Santa Barbara, Calif.
"I stayed in Barre, Vt., at my apartment and worked all break. It was relaxing. I slept in, worked at 1 p.m., and hung out with friends at night," said Brittany Swartzenberg, a 21-year-old junior business management major from Danville, Vt.
"I went home and relaxed with some friends and did some snowboarding," said Tim Gompf, a 20-year-old criminal justice major from Trenton, N.J.
Although most students didn't go anywhere too exciting many of them wished they could have spent their spring break in places other than home.
"I would have like to have gone somewhere like the deep south like Alabama or Georgia. I just love the south and I want to go back and experience more of the culture," Schueler said.
"I would have loved to go to Italy. I think it's a beautiful place, full of culture and I want to experience it," Swartzenberg said.
"I would have gone to Tahoe, to do some snowboarding if I could have gone anywhere," Gompf said.
Norwich only has one break during the spring semester, unlike many state colleges which have breaks every five weeks.
"I think it would be amazing if Norwich adopted the state college vacation schedule. It would help reduce the amount of stress that so many students are under," Swartzenberg said.
Many students say this break helps them get ready for the last push of the semester.
"I was pretty excited to go home and relax for this break," Gompf said.
"I was looking forward to spring break a lot to take a break from the monotony of the Corps of Cadets," Babbe said.
"I need spring break just to get some of my sanity back and mentally prepare for all of my classes that are back loaded," Swartzenberg said.
"I was really looking forward to spring break. I had three tests, one take-home test, three projects, one journalism story, two papers, and a presentation all in the week before spring break so after it was over, all I wanted to do was kick back at home," Schueler said.
