Norwich University has the Major General Ernest Harmon wall that honors our fallen graduates, those who have died in wars across the globe, but why not have a Hall of Heroes like Virginia Military Institute.
The Guidon proposes that Norwich create a Hall of Heroes. It could be either a part of a building or a new building dedicated to our fallen heroes.
Within this building you would have all the photographs of the veterans or heroes that Norwich has produced in the 191 years as a military college.
The hall would have the pictures either as a head shot or a full body shot along with a written description of the person. There could also be space if their loved ones would like to donate their medals; Norwich could put those in cases below their photos.
The Guidon believes honoring these heroes is very important to the school. It shows how much we appreciate their ultimate sacrifice, their service to our country and families.
This Hall of Heroes wouldn’t just cover the corps side of the school; it would also cover the civilians too because there are Norwich civilian graduates who go into the service after their years at Norwich.
Even students who didn’t graduate from Norwich, but attended the school, should be honored. In fact, this should happen for the Major General Ernest Harmon Wall. Norwich to find out if there are any fallen heroes who are not on that wall because they did not graduate. If they attended Norwich and carry even a little bit of the leadership qualities that were taught to them while they were here, they should be recognized.
We think this honor would bring a lot more respect to our students and memories to our alumni who attend the school or return each year for Homecoming weekend.
If you think about it for a minute, how many times a day do you walk past that wall and actually look at names on there and know what they looked like or what they did for the country, and what they received for it? It’s something every student should do.
With a Hall of Heroes each and every person will be allowed to see who they were and remember what the men and women gave for our country, and take a step back and reflect on it.
